Independence Day, the 1996 blockbuster film about an alien invasion of
earth, with its iconic image of the destruction of the White House, was written by its director, Roland Emmerich, and its producer Dean Devlin.
The original idea came to Emmerich after a journalist asked whether he believed that there was alien life anywhere out in the
universe.
